I don't know much about anime films, but I can recommend checking out Yuichi Yokoyama's incredibly inventive book <EM>New Engineering</EM> to give you a very different perspective on Japanese cartooning. <A HREF="http://www.thehighhat.com/Marginalia/006/Yokoyama_Lanier.html" REL="nofollow">This amazing essay</A> introduced me to his work a while ago, before it was even available in English, and it's every bit as interesting and complex as that makes it sound.
