And a Few Extracurricular Readings

Thanks to GreenCine, I got a belly laugh from Christopher Orr's review of The Happening. Thanks to him, I don't have to sit through it and got all the unintentional enjoyment without spending 10 bucks on it. I hope people stop giving that fuck money to make movies from now on.

Also, you might have caught Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired on HBO this past week, and if you didn't, I would highly recommend doing so, although I was a tad disappointed that I didn't get to see more Nastassja Kinski than just a photo or two. Regardless, Kim Masters discusses why there was an alteration from its Sundance and Cannes premieres and why that matters.

I kind of liked THE LADY IN THE WATER. But then I also liked CHUCK AND LARRY, so do with that what you will.

Oh, Eric, I'm learning so much about you in the past week.

I think you're officially the only person I've heard of that liked Lady in the Water. Did that officially kill Bryce Dallas Howard's career?

Every now and then I'm at a party and the film comes up and I discover there are others who liked it.

I kinda like her. I can't remember her performance in the film, but she was decent (or indecent) in Manderlay, and I liked her in Spiderman 3. Maybe she'll be in the remake of Cache =P.

Lady in the Water officially killed my last lingering little bit of respect for Shyamalan. The Village had a silly twist, and consequently a very silly final act, but the first two-thirds of the movie were quite good, with the very creepy monster design and a nice sense of mystery and suspense within this weirdly old-fashioned village. I can't imagine how he could have resolved this scenario without letting me down, but definitely not the way he did it. On the other hand, Lady was just ridiculous right from the conception, and the execution didn't make it any better. The new one sounds just as laughable, thanks for that hilarious link. Saves me a lot of trouble.

No offense, Eric, but I'm glad we don't frequent the same parties. Lady in the Water conversations? Yikes.

And Ed, I officially lost all respect for him with Signs, which is just abysmal.

Lady in the Water was the only film of his that I walked out of the theater liking.

As I didn't see Lady in the Water, I can only express excitement in that it wasn't Signs that you liked.

I'm only halfway through this Japanese camera bootleg of The Happening (thanks, Asians!), and it's already the funniest thing I've seen this year. It's Wicker Man good.

I, too, don't hate Lady in the Water. Signs is much sloppier. I think Wide Awake is my favorite of his. Rosie O'Ded is my homegirl! BTW, Shayamalan already has his next film financed and set up (a live action version of that Nick cartoon Avatar), and The Happening made more than people expected, so regardless of quality, he'll still get financing. Like Emmerich does.
