The Berlinale Retrospective in Posters

As people seemed to like the poster collections I made last year for Cannes, Toronto and Venice, I decided to give 'er another whirl with Berlin. As I found more posters than I was planning, I decided to separate the Retrospective and Homage sections from the newer titles in the Competition, Panorama and Forum sections. Not all of the films are represented here, as some don't happen to have any... and the other omissions likely didn't have a worthwhile poster to display. Some were chosen only because I was tired of seeing the common ones we've all seen before (I do recognize one of the films below is a Japanese DVD sleeve, but I really couldn't resist using it). The 2nd part of this poster entry will be up this evening.

Great detective work as always. Most of these were new to me. Love the Ascent, la Notte, Finzi Continis, Charulata and Pauline especially. ALL those films were playing in Berlin this year? Now I'm even more jealous.

Thanks Adrian. Some of them were new to me as well though Repulsion and Maria Braun have been two of my favorites for a while.

Yeah, I'm pretty disappointed that I'm not there either... but if it's any consolation, Jeanne Moreau was supposed to have a dialogue with Hanns Zischler, but it got canceled. At least there's one thing I don't have to feel bad about missing.

Thanks again Joe, I love these posters. Rohmers "Pauline on the beach", is a favourite. It's from the long since gone Academy Cinema on Londons Oxford Sreet, where I spent many an afternoon as a teenager.

God, the good ol' days of hand-painted film posters. If only that trend would return.
