Well, Kathryn Bigelow Is Hotter Than James Cameron...

While The Hurt Locker isn't exactly my favorite film of last year, it's the perfect "I'm okay with _____ winning so long as ______ and _______ doesn't." I think that's pretty much how most people are with the Oscar nominees this year. Kathryn Bigelow's war drama took home six BAFTAs today (for those not acronym savvy, it's the British Academy of Film and Television Arts Awards), setting it as the likely frontrunner for the Best Picture race at the Oscars. Andrea Arnold's wonderful Fish Tank won the prize for Outstanding British Film. The major awards are below; the nominees are here; and the full list of awards are here.

These awards felt like a fist in my womb, as it were.

I think I'd even be happy if Inglourious Basterds wins as long as it's not The Hurt Locker, which I loathe with every fiber of my being.

I think Avatar really should win, since it's the most accomplished film nominated, in every category except the acting and the dialogue. I think only nominees that would produce a smile on my face if they win, aside from Avatar, are A Serious Man, An Education, or Precious. Gad help us.

Kudos for Fish Tank though. I think A Prophet is coming out here this month so I look forward to that, even though the trailer looked very reminiscent of Gomorrah.

I just watched Up in the Air again last night and the writing was worse than I remembered it. Oh well, nobody said this was the high point of Western culture.

My point being, of course, that the two winners for screenwriting have a couple of the sorriest scripts of the season..

The way I feel about Precious is similar to the way you feel about The Hurt Locker.
