As of right now, Sony has eight box-sets lined up for this fall. I already mentioned the New Hollywood set, as well as the Sam Fuller one. The other six include 2 Film Noir collections, 2 Screwball Comedy collections, a Rita Hayworth set, and a William Castle Collection. The Decade List: Some Honorable Mentions for 2002

There's less than 10 days left in May, and I have at least eighteen more films I want to cover for 2002, which apparently was a pretty outstanding year for world cinema. Here are a few I won't get a chance to rewatch (unless you enthusiastically suggest that I should), and I've thrown together some babbling about a few of them. Forgive the rushed nature of this (and probably a few of the seventeen that I'm going to try to get to as soon as possible). They are in no particular order, though the annotated ones are at the top.

Ma vraie vie à Rouen [My Life on Ice] - dir. Olivier Ducastel, Jacques Martineau

Like a fictionalized Tarnation, Ma vraie vie à Rouen examines the perils of growing up and sexual maturation via the digital revolution. Comprised of teenage Étienne's (Jimmy Tavares) video footage during one summer, Ducastel and Martineau (Jeanne et le garçcon formidable) evade some of Tarnation's faults (most of them involving director/subject Jonathan Caouette's self-obliviousness), and though Ma vraie vie à Rouen is a less compelling watch than Tarnation, it's smart and un-exploitive.

25th Hour - dir. Spike Lee

As far as Spike Lee, Hired Director, films go, 25th Hour is quite good. It doesn't exactly right the wrongs of Bamboozled, but 25th Hour's power comes at the exact same time placement where Bamboozled descends into ludicrousness. It's hard not to notice the similarities between Anna Paquin's characters in this and the later Squid and the Whale, two strange acts of miscasting which turn her into a desirable teenage sexpot. The Squid and the Whale is probably the better of the two, in terms of Paquin perversion, if only because it re-teams the actress with Jeff Daniels, who previously played her father in the family-friendly Fly Away Home.

The Good Girl - dir. Miguel Arteta

Effectively low-key, The Good Girl, director Arteta and writer White's follow-up to the dark-and-quirky Chuck & Buck, retained the discomfort and "edginess" of their first collaboration. Jennifer Aniston, as an unhappily married convenient store employee, is probably as good as she'll ever be. Like Anna Paquin, Jake Gyllenhaal does a repeat character and situation here, as a doofus teenager who starts an affair with an older married woman, as he did in Nicole Holofcener's blasé Lovely & Amazing from the previous year. While it's hard to choose Aniston over Catherine Keener, Aniston's attempt to rid herself of her increasingly irritating younger man is precisely what makes The Good Girl better than your average Hollywood actor-does-a-Sundance-flick..

Choses secrètes [Secret Things] - dir. Jean-Claude Brisseau

It's hard to nail Jean-Claude Brisseau's Secret Things down. It's at once pulpy erotica, social comedy, gender commentary and a supernatural horror/fantasy. While I'm still unsure what to make of the film, it's certainly engaging and successful on a few of those levels. After imprisonment, which was directly related to the casting sessions for this particular film, Brisseau made a follow-up, entitled The Exterminating Angels [Les anges exterminateurs], which (like Catherine Breillat's Sex Is Comedy is to Fat Girl) looked at the filmmaking process of Secret Things.

I've never been able to put my finger on why it is I always think I like the film May. It certainly has a lot on its side: a central character in the vain of Catherine Deneuve in Repulsion and Sissy Spacek in Carrie, plenty of dismemberment, a hilarious performance from Anna Faris as a salivating-at-the-mouth lesbian. If memory serves me correctly, May isn't entirely successful in its funny/tragic Dario Argento-inspired tale, but I seem to remember it quite fondly. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Antichrist Comes to America

Not to be outdone with its Cannes acquisitions, IFC has picked up Lars Von Trier's hot potato Antichrist for US release. The cut will be the same as the one which screened a few days ago, though no date has been mentioned. IFC previously released Von Trier's The Boss of It All and Manderlay. The studio also picked up the more crowd-pleasing Looking for Eric, from director Ken Loach, bringing their total count to 4, which is 2 ahead of their biggest competetor Sony Pictures Classics. In non-Cannes news, IFC also announced it snagged François Ozon's Ricky for a 2010 release.

The Decade List: La vie nouvelle (2002)

La vie nouvelle - dir. Philippe Grandrieux

Like another notorious French film from 2002, Gaspar Noé's Irrèversible, Philippe Grandrieux's La vie nouvelle, with its schizophrenic camera and piercing audio frequency, provokes a dangerous sensation. Like his previous Sombre, La vie nouvelle pulsates like a tremor, as if we're entering a universe after some unnamed, unmentioned nuclear disaster. While it's easy to make visual association to familiar images of horror like Night of the Living Dead when the film opens on a dark pasture with zombie-like peasants, Salò; or The 120 Days of Sodom while a group of Russian criminals strip a group of beautiful youths naked or Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me as characters malevolently scream into the air, Grandrieux's vision is wholly unique. (I tried not to make the Lynch comparison, as that seems to be everyone's ignorant go-to when comparing the dark and experimental, but it's hard not to recall Killer Bob heckling to the sky as he kills Laura Palmer.)

Melania (Anna Mouglalis, an actress I'd shrugged off as bland until I saw this) is one of those Salò youths, stripped first of her clothes and then of her hair before entering some sort of sex trade. Seymour (Zachary Knighton) is the Yankee teenager, somehow wrapped up in this seedy world, who wants to save her, even if he can't get an erection while they're fucking and even if he isn't sure why he wants to help her. Other than these details, not much else is revealed.

While someone like Gaspar Noé's motives are blindingly clear, Grandrieux's are not. Though I risk delegating the film into easy descriptive sectors as a result of my inability to fully grasp it, La vie nouvelle could certainly fall into the broad spectrum of a mood piece, but more than that, it's an experience. Reading about Lars Von Trier's Antichrist was sort of the push I needed to write about this film, as it's comparably divisive... though with much less fanfare. Some have called the film hollow, a statement I typically find to be prematurely dismissive. I won't totally reject the idea that Grandrieux may have nothing concrete to say, but saying nothing in such an arresting way isn't without some merit.

That is why I return to the idea of La vie nouvelle as an experience, unfortunately one that very few people outside of France have had. Watching the film is an absolutely unnerving undertaking, nearly impossible to endure without a lump in one's throat. It's a frightening vision of a slightly recognizable hell, where tainted innocence attempts to latch onto its infected cognate in hopes to reclaim what they know cannot be salvaged in themselves. La vie nouvelle is nearly designed to elicit (and aggravate) a response from the viewer, and while those responses aren't the most pleasing, it certainly does its job.
