There had been rumors that one of McDowell's family members was working on a restored version of the film a while back, and it looks like next year, it'll finally see the light of day.

Yes his sister is assisting with the restoration. They were near inseparable and she manages his estate. I was leafing through some of his visual works recently at Margaret Tedesco's 2nd Floor Projects in SF, who had an exhibition of his drawings and paintings recently and she informed me that there would be a very special "Criterion-like" version out soon. She is also selling beautiful chapbook editions with an essay by William E. Jones.
Thanks for the information, Bradford. I had heard his sister was working on bringing his works to DVD, but that was a few years back. I'm just glad to hear things are finally getting in motion. As far as I know, all of the European editions of Thundercrack! are the shorter version of the film.
At last! After 35 years, will we finally get a clean, restored (both visuals and sound) version of my all-time-favorite film? I live in hope.
Yes, I'm very excited. I was also reading that the version most people have seen (which includes, I believe, the DVDs that were released in the Netherlands and Scandinavia) isn't a complete version -- but that the Anniversary DVD should have it ALL.
