DVD Coming Attractions, Part 2

Instead of sorting through what I'd already mentioned on the DVD updates, I've made it (hopefully) a little easier by dividing the notable releases by week. Some of the highlights include a Blu-ray release of Paul Verhoeven's masterpiece Showgirls in a "15th Anniversary Sinsational Edition," a surprise DVD release of Manoel de Oliveira's Eccentricities of a Blonde-Haired Girl [Singularidades de uma Rapariga Loira] from Cinema Guild in September and a number of European titles from Olive Films Opus for late 2010 and early 2011. I may be doing the same thing for Region 2 titles later this week.

Douglas Sirk + Barbara Stanwyck + Daria; DVD Update 12 February

Universal has announced a Barbara Stanwyck box set as part of their Blacklot Series. The six titles included are listed below, but the two that are most alluring are the two Stanwyck did with Douglas Sirk: All I Desire and There's Always Tomorrow. The set will be available on 27 April.

A couple of weeks ago, E1 Distribution announced their plans for a 50th Anniversary DVD and Blu-ray edition for Fellini's La dolce vita, set to be released sometime in 2010. Doctor Zhivago, African Queen, Bergman in Spain: DVD Update 12 January

New DVDs. Another African Queen date change (but... cover art has surfaced, so things are looking more and more official). Scarcely few Blu-ray announcements. However, good news for Bergman fans: the Spanish studio Cameo has announced a Blu-ray release of Fanny & Alexander the mini-series (the UK BR from Palisades Tartan is only the theatrical version), as well as a Collector's Edition DVD of its sequel The Best Intentions [Den goda viljan], which is still MIA on DVD in the US, for 23 February. Written by Bergman, directed by Bille August, winner of the Palme d'Or in 1992, the Collector's Edition will contain both the theatrical version and the little-seen (outside of Sweden) 323-minute television version. This is, as far as I'm aware, the first release of the television version of Fanny & Alexander on Blu-ray, as well as the television version of The Best Intentions on DVD. Sadly, the discs only come with Spanish subtitles, but again, perhaps this is a good sign for an upcoming release in the US. The DVD and Blu-ray announcements below are in descending order of release, and the italicized ones are for date changes.

DVD/Acquisition Update, 5 December

Here's a quick DVD update, as I haven't posted one in a little while... there's not a lot of surprises to speak of, unless you consider the re-release of a made-for-television movie starring Casper Van Dien as James Dean (and Diane Ladd as his mother!) a serendipitous blessing. Only two Blu-ray releases seemed worthy of mentioning, both from Warner on 2 March: Desmond Davis' Clash of the Titans and, one of my childhood favorites, Wolfgang Petersen's The NeverEnding Story. As I told my friend Mike, I bet Limahl's theme song will sound truly breathtaking in high-definition sound (fingers crossed that the music video is included!).

It appears as though Kino will be the official DVD studio for Lorber Films, with the first title being Kay Pollak's As It Is in Heaven [Så som i himmelen], a 2005 Oscar nominee for Best Foreign Film from Sweden.

In (exciting) acquisition news, Cinema Guild picked up two films in the past week: Maren Ade's Everyone Else [Alle Anderen] and Ilisa Barbash and Lucien Castaing-Taylor's Sweetgrass. Both films screened at this year's New York Film Festival to some really positive notices. Look for them sometime in 2010.

Though I already posted about Strand picking up Catherine Breillat's Blue Beard [Barbe bleue], they informed me that the film, which also screened at the NYFF, will begin its limited run in NYC on 12 March, followed by a DVD release in June. And finally, the DVD release update is below, in descending order of release.

- The Invention of Lying, 2009, d. Ricky Gervais, Matthew Robinson, Warner, also on Blu-ray, 19 January
- Good Hair, 2009, d. Jeff Stilson, Lionsgate, 9 February
- The Sarah Silverman Program, Season 2, Volume 2, 2008, Comedy Central/Paramount, 9 February
- The Private Lives of Pippa Lee, 2009, d. Rebecca Miller, Screen Media, also on Blu-ray, 16 February
- The Damned United, 2009, d. Tom Hooper, Sony, also on Blu-ray, 23 February
- James Dean: Race with Destiny, 1997, d. Mardi Rustam, MPI, 23 February, w. Casper Van Dien, Diane Ladd
- The Last Hurrah, 2009, d. Jonathan W. Stokes, Cinema Libre, 23 February
- Mr. Right, 2006, d. David Morris, Jacqui Morris, Wolfe, 23 February
- The September Issue, 2009, d. R.J. Cutler, Lionsgate, 23 February

- The Beaches of Agnès [Les plages d'Agnès], 2008, d. Agnès Varda, Cinema Guild, 23 February

Good News, Otherwise

Just a day after learning about the Catherine Breillat/Naomi Campbell team-up being canceled, Strand Releasing announced that it has picked up her latest Bluebeard [Barbe Bleue] for US distribution. Bluebeard premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival earlier this year and screens at the New York Film Festival this weekend. Expect it sometime in 2010.

Altman's Streamers on DVD, Acquisitions, Foreign Oscar Submission Updates

Music Box Films acquired the first installment of the Millennium trilogy, based on the posthumously released novels of Stieg Larsson, entitled The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo [Män som hatar kvinnor] directed by Niels Arden Oplev (Worlds Apart). Part 2, The Girl Who Played with Fire [Flickan som lekte med elden], was released in Sweden, Denmark, Finland and Norway on 18 September, and Part 3, The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest [Luftslottet som sprängdes], is scheduled for 27 November in Scandinavia. The second and third installments are directed by Daniel Alfredson.

Film Movement picked up the Erik Poppe's Norwegian thriller Troubled Water for a 2010 release. Film Movement previously released Poppe's Hawaii, Oslo a couple years ago. Lorber Films have added two new documentaries to their slate in Niko von Glasow's Nobody's Perfect, about individuals with birth defects as a result of the drug Thalidomide, and N.C. Heikin's Kimjongilia, which interviews North Korean refugees about their experiences. Strand has also picked up Florian Gallenberger's biopic John Rabe, which stars Ulrich Tukur in the title role as well as Daniel Brühl, Steve Buscemi and Anne Consigny. The film premiered at Berlin earlier this year.

Two more titles have been added to the Foreign Oscar race. Columbia chose Ciro Guerra's Los viajes del viento [The Wind Journeys], and Havana Marking's documentary Afghan Star will represent the UK.

Shout! Factory announced a 19 January street date for Robert Altman's Streamers, which stars Matthew Modine, Michael Wright, Mitchell Lichtenstein and David Alan Grier and is based on the play by David Rabe. It's pretty minor Altman, in my opinion, but a noteworthy release nonetheless. Fox will release (500) Days of Summer on DVD and Blu-ray on 22 December. Gini Reticker's doc Pray the Devil Back to Hell will be released by Passion River on 10 November. And finally, Warner has announced Blu-ray released of Clint Eastwood's Mystic River and Morton DaCosta's The Music Man for 2 February 2010.

And some more date changes: Kino has pushed Loren Cass to 5 January. Paramount moved the first season of The United States of Tara to 29 December.

Miscellaneous Updates for 23 September

I mentioned my friend Stewart Copeland's film Jennifer playing on PBS' POV the other day; well, James Hansen posted the interview he conducted with Copeland yesterday on the Out 1 Film Journal. If you missed its airing last night, you can watch it here. Also, for the bored, you can watch the "web series" All the Young Dudes, which Stewart and I both worked on, via his website. I play a slightly exaggerated version of myself in three episodes. Look out, Courtney Love.

Canada has selected Xavier Dolan's I Killed My Mother [J'ai tué ma mère] to be their representative for the Oscars next year, which, if nominated, would make its director (one of?) the youngest director to be nominated for a narrative feature (correct me if I'm wrong). Canada last claimed the prize in 2004 with Denys Arcand's The Barbarian Invasions [Les invasions barbares]. Poland has chosen Borys Lankosz's The Reverse [Rewers], and Bosnia and Herzegovina named Namik Kabil's Guardians of the Night [Čuvari noći] as their official submission. According to Movie On, the Netherlands will be submitting The Silent Army, Italy's choice of Giuseppe Tornatore's Baarìa is not official and Serbia is reconsidering their choice of Here and There due to its prevalent English dialogue.

In acquisition news, Magnolia will add another Tilda Swinton to their roster (after Julia) in Luca Guadagnino's I Am Love [Io sono l'amore]. The film premiered at Venice and also played at Toronto... and was, according to Vice President Tom Quinn, "unanimously [Magnolia's] favorite film at Toronto." Sony Pictures Classics also picked up Aaron Schneider's Get Low, which stars Bill Murray, Robert Duvall, Sissy Spacek and Lucas Black.

And finally, I also have a few DVD updates for you. Though few, there are some noteworthy titles that have been announced, including the doc Beautiful Losers from Oscilloscope and Pascal-Alex Vincent's feature debut Give Me Your Hand [Donne-moi la main] from Strand, which I have yet to see.

- The Carter, 2009, d. Adam Bhala Lough, Virgil Films, 17 November
- Funny People, 2009, d. Judd Apatow, Universal, also on Blu-ray, 24 November
- Beautiful Losers, 2008, d. Aaron Rose, Joshua Leonard, Oscilloscope, 8 December

- Ichi: The Movie, 2008, d. Fumihiko Sori, FUNimation, also on Blu-ray, 22 December
- Downloading Nancy, 2008, d. Johan Renck, Strand, 12 January
- Give Me Your Hand [Donne-moi la main], 2008, d. Pascal-Alex Vincent, Strand, 26 January

07 August 2009

DVDs, Acquisitions, Etc. - 7 August

In addition to the DVD releases below, Sony will be releasing Mary Shelley's Frankenstein on Blu-ray on 13 October. There weren't any other exciting Blu-ray release announcements made, so I didn't create a section for it this time around.

- Ace [Asso], 1981, d. Franco Castellano, Giuseppe Moccia, MVD, 11 August, w. Edwige Fenech

In acquisition news, Strand picked up the latest from André Téchiné, The Girl on the Train [La fille du RER], which boasts a pretty impressive cast which includes Catherine Deneuve, Ronit Elkabetz, Michel Blanc, Mathieu Demy, Nicolas Duvauchelle and Émilie Dequenne in the title role.

I must have missed the official announcement, but via ioncinema.com, it looks as though Haim Tabakman's Eyes Wide Open, which premiered at Cannes this year, was picked up by here! Films for a 2010 release. The film opens on 2 September in France and will screen at TIFF.

Milestone has found a partner in Oscilloscope Pictures after New Yorker's closure earlier this year. The studio, who previously released Mikhail Kalatozov's I Am Cuba, Manoel de Oliveira's I'm Going Home [Je rentre à la maison], Charles Burnett's Killer of Sheep, Orson Welles' The Trial [Le procès] and Marcel Ophüls's The Sorrow and the Pity [Le chagrin et la pitié] among others, has several titles lined up for the near-future, including Kent MacKenzie's The Exiles (which is featured prominently in Los Angeles Plays Itself), Margot Benacerraf's Araya and a 30th Anniversary edition of Rob Epstein's Word Is Out.

Also, be sure to check out IFC.com's Fall Movie Preview, which covers the "Indie" Theatrical Releases; a guide to On Demand as well as DVD and Internet releases and what you can find at the selected Repertory Theatres around the country (and elsewhere). It's sure to be more helpful than whatever Entertainment Weekly has to offer. If you want some tips from yours truly, steer clear from Nicolas Winding Refn's heinous Bronson, which Magnolia will premiere On Demand. It's a skuzziest showboat of a movie, best appreciated by the douchebag Guy Ritchie devotees. Also, I'd advice against IFC's Festival Direct title Better Things, which boasts the claim "The Dardenne brothers meet Lynne Ramsay" on Soda Pictures' R2 DVD artwork. I know plenty of people, myself included, who could hardly say no to such a description, but don't be fooled by that or its gorgeous overcast aesthetics; it's pretty barren. All for now.
