In a surprise move, the LA Film Critics Association named WALL·E the best film of 2008, with The Dark Knight as its runner-up. The rest of the awards went to Danny Boyle, Sean Penn, Sally Hawkins (!), Heath Ledger, Penélope Cruz (!!), Mike Leigh, Still Life, Man on Wire and Waltz with Bashir (though I don't quite understand why it won Best Animation when their best film was animated... alas...).
